Evaluation Teams

Evaluation visits are normally composed of 5 evaluators, although larger or smaller teams may be assigned, depending on an institution’s specific circumstances. Team composition varies depending upon the level of education offered, the nature of the accreditation sought (i.e. programmatic or institutional), instructional modalities employed, and the status sought (i.e., candidate status, initial accreditation, or reaffirmation).

Joint or coordinated evaluation visits with other recognized accrediting bodies normally have 2 or 3 ABHE representatives. The team composition depends on the nature of the visit and specialties of the personnel contributed by the cooperating agency. Joint visits also include an ABHE staff member.

Programmatic accreditation evaluation visits normally have 2 or 3 members. At least one of the evaluators must be a practitioner in the field of the education being evaluated. Another must be an educator from an ABHE accredited institution. Programmatic visit teams are accompanied by an ABHE staff member.

Special evaluation visits typically contain 2 or 3 evaluators and the composition of the team depends upon the type of visit and the issues at hand.
